Athlete's Foot

Athlete's foot (tinea pedis) is one of the most common fungal skin infections we see at the clinic. It can affect anyone, not just athletes, and is easily picked up in warm, moist environments like swimming pools, gym changing rooms, and communal showers.

What Does It Look Like?

Athlete's foot typically appears between the toes, but it can spread to the soles and sides of the feet. Common symptoms include:

  • Itching and burning between the toes, especially the 4th and 5th toes
  • Dry, flaky, or peeling skin
  • Red, cracked, or sore patches
  • Small blisters in more severe cases
  • An unpleasant odour

How Is It Spread?

The fungus thrives in warm, damp conditions. You can pick it up by walking barefoot in contaminated areas or by sharing towels, socks, or shoes with someone who has the infection.

Treatment

Most cases of athlete's foot respond well to antifungal treatments available from your pharmacist. These come as creams, sprays, or powders and should be applied as directed, usually for at least two weeks even after symptoms have cleared.

For persistent or severe infections, we can advise on stronger treatment options and check whether the infection has spread to the toenails (fungal nail infection).

Prevention Tips

  • Dry your feet thoroughly after washing, especially between the toes
  • Change socks daily and choose breathable materials like cotton or wool
  • Wear flip-flops in communal showers and changing rooms
  • Alternate your shoes to let them dry out between wears
  • Use antifungal powder in your shoes if you are prone to infection
