Cracked Heels
Cracked heels (heel fissures) are one of the most common foot complaints, especially during the summer months when we tend to wear open-backed shoes and sandals.
What Causes Cracked Heels?
The skin on our heels is naturally thicker than elsewhere on the body. When this skin becomes excessively dry, it loses its elasticity and can crack under the pressure of walking and standing. Common contributing factors include:
- Dry skin — some people are naturally prone to dry skin
- Open-backed shoes — sandals and flip-flops allow the fat pad under the heel to expand sideways, increasing pressure on the skin
- Standing for long periods — increases pressure on the heels
- Being overweight — puts additional pressure on the heel pad
- Medical conditions — diabetes, eczema, psoriasis, and thyroid conditions can affect skin quality
Are Cracked Heels Serious?
For most people, cracked heels are a cosmetic nuisance. However, if the fissures become deep, they can bleed and become painful. In severe cases, the cracks can become infected — this is a particular concern for people with diabetes or compromised immune systems.
Treatment and Prevention
- Moisturise daily — use a good quality foot cream containing urea, which helps to soften and hydrate thickened skin
- Use a foot file gently — regular light filing on dry skin can help reduce callus build-up
- Avoid open-backed shoes when possible, especially if you are prone to cracked heels
- Stay hydrated — drinking plenty of water helps maintain skin hydration
For stubborn or severe cracked heels, a professional podiatry treatment can make a dramatic difference. We carefully remove the hard, cracked skin and smooth the heels, then advise on the best ongoing care routine.
