Verrucae

Verrucae (plantar warts) are one of the most common conditions we treat at Perfect Feet Podiatry. They are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) and appear on the soles of the feet.

What Do Verrucae Look Like?

A verruca typically appears as a small, rough, cauliflower-like growth on the sole of the foot. You may notice:

  • A flat area of hard skin with tiny black dots (these are small blood vessels)
  • Pain when you squeeze the sides of the verruca (rather than pressing directly on it)
  • One single verruca or a cluster of several (a mosaic verruca)

Are They Contagious?

Yes, verrucae are contagious. The virus spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact or indirectly through contaminated surfaces, particularly in warm, moist environments like swimming pool changing areas.

Do They Need Treatment?

In healthy adults, verrucae will often resolve on their own as the immune system fights off the virus. However, this can take months or even years. Treatment is recommended if:

  • The verruca is painful
  • It has been present for a long time
  • It is spreading or getting bigger
  • It is affecting your daily activities

Treatment Options

We offer several treatment approaches depending on the size, location, and duration of your verruca:

  • Caustic treatments — chemical acids applied to destroy the verruca tissue
  • Verruca needling — a procedure under local anaesthetic that stimulates an immune response
  • SWIFT microwave therapy — the latest technology using controlled microwave energy

Each treatment has its own advantages and we will recommend the most suitable approach for your individual case. Visit our verrucae treatments page for more details.
